Essential Prenatal Nutrients

🧠
Folate/Folic Acid 400–800mcg
Critical in first trimester. Prevents neural tube defects. Start before conception if possible.
🦴
Iron 27mg
Supports blood volume increase. Many women need supplemental iron — check with your provider.
☀️
Vitamin D 600 IU+
Bone development and immune support. Many pregnant women are deficient.
🐟
DHA/Omega-3 200mg+
Fetal brain and eye development. Often not in standard prenatal vitamins — check the label.
🥛
Calcium 1,000mg
Bone health for mother and baby. Often obtained from diet — verify your intake.
🔬
Iodine 220mcg
Thyroid function and fetal brain development. Surprisingly absent in many prenatal brands.

Prescription vs. OTC Prenatals

Prescription prenatal vitamins generally contain the same nutrients as quality OTC brands, but with some differences: higher iron doses, folate (vs. folic acid — better absorbed by the ~40% of women with MTHFR variants), DHA inclusion, and softer gel formulations. They're often covered by insurance — zero cost to you. Ask your OB about prescription options.
