Grapefruit dramatically increases simvastatin levels in the blood by up to 330%. This raises the risk of serious muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis) and kidney failure.
How it works
Grapefruit inhibits intestinal CYP3A4, the enzyme responsible for metabolizing simvastatin before it reaches the bloodstream.
What to do: Completely avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking simvastatin. This restriction applies around the clock. Even small amounts can cause dangerous levels.

๐ท Large Amounts of Alcohol⚡ Moderate
Heavy alcohol use combined with simvastatin increases risk of liver damage and can worsen muscle side effects.
How it works
Both simvastatin and alcohol are metabolized by the liver. Combined use increases liver enzyme elevation risk.
What to do: Limit alcohol to occasional, moderate consumption. Avoid heavy or binge drinking entirely.
