Sertraline Food Interactions

Brand names: Zoloft

SSRI Antidepressant

2
High Risk
๐Ÿท Alcohol ⚠️ High Risk

Alcohol worsens depression, anxiety, and insomnia โ€” the very conditions sertraline treats. Combined, they can cause dangerous sedation, impaired judgment, and suicidal thoughts.

How it works

Both alcohol and sertraline affect serotonin pathways. Alcohol is a CNS depressant that counteracts antidepressant benefits.

What to do: Avoid alcohol entirely during depression and anxiety treatment. Even small amounts can trigger setbacks.

๐ŸŒฟ St. John's Wort ⚠️ High Risk

Combining sertraline with St. John's Wort can cause serotonin syndrome โ€” a potentially life-threatening condition with agitation, high fever, rapid heartbeat, tremors, and sweating.

How it works

Both sertraline and St. John's Wort increase serotonin activity. Combined, serotonin accumulates to toxic levels.

What to do: Never take St. John's Wort with any prescribed antidepressant (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs). Tell every healthcare provider what supplements you take.
