St. John's Wort significantly reduces the blood levels of estrogen and progestin in birth control pills, potentially making them ineffective and leading to unintended pregnancy.
How it works
St. John's Wort induces CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, accelerating the breakdown of both estrogen and progestin.
What to do: Do NOT take St. John's Wort while using oral contraceptives. Use a backup contraceptive method for at least one cycle if you have been taking it.
