When sodium intake drops or you become dehydrated, your kidneys compensate by retaining lithium. This can cause lithium toxicity: tremors, confusion, nausea, seizures, and coma.
How it works
Lithium and sodium share the same renal reabsorption pathway. When sodium is depleted, kidneys increase lithium reabsorption.
What to do: Maintain consistent, adequate salt intake and stay well-hydrated. Do NOT go on a low-sodium diet without telling your psychiatrist. Monitor during hot weather or illness.
