Grapefruit increases atorvastatin blood levels, raising the risk of muscle pain, weakness, and in severe cases, rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown).
How it works
Grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4 in the gut, reducing atorvastatin first-pass metabolism and increasing drug levels.
What to do: Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice (more than 1 quart/day). Occasional small amounts may be acceptable โ ask your pharmacist.
